Marco Chiaramonte, a fourth year wrestler at Memorial University, represented Canada at the 2005 Deaflympics held on January 5th-16th in Melbourne, Australia, and was the only Canadian wrestler competing in the Deaflympics this year.

Marco competed in both Greco Roman and Free Style wrestling, however was eliminated in Greco Roman after loosing a match by superiority to the Russian, Evgeny Golovanoy, who ultimately went on to win the gold medal in that weight class. Marco fared much better in the Free Style category where he came very close to winning the bronze medal. Marco started the freestyle competition by winning his first match against the Mongolian wrestler, Baasandil with a score of 8-0. In his second match, he suffered a loss against the Russian wrestler, Khugaey, by a ten point superiority (12-2), however made up for it the next day by serving the same fate to his Bulgarian opponent Aleh Valiayeu, beating him 10-0. This win placed him in the bronze medal match, wrestling against Yildiz of Turkey. In the fight for bronze, Chiaramonte found himself in overtime with a score of 3-3. It was here that his opponent scored a controversial point after Chiaramonte attempted a shoulder throw and misthrew with the Turkish wrestler circling behind. Normally when this happens in a match no points are awarded to either wrestler, however, the officials awarded Yildiz one point, and despite protest from Chiaramonte’s coach Liam Kelly, the call was final and it cost Chiaramonte the bronze medal.

Of course, all of Chiaramonte’s teammates, fans, friends and family are very proud of his finish and are not surprised with Marco’s response to his placing; “It’s alright, I’ll compete again in four years and go for the gold in China”.

Chiaramonte says that he has learned a lot from this competition, “…especially on how to prepare before your match, warming up, and focusing…I realized not to be too relaxed before your match, just stay warm and keep warming up.” Marco believes that this experience will ultimately help him in the remainder of the wrestling season and states, “Winning CI’s, that’s my goal now. I have gained a lot of experience from this competition here, so it will definitely be a big help.” The 2005 CIS Championship (CI’s) will be held at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario on March 4th and 5th. We all wish Marco the very best in all of his future competitions.
